High Heeled Combat Boots
The question of whether or not drafting women for service in armed forces is appropriate.
Currently only three countries conscript women and men: Israel, Norway and Sweden. However with rising tensions around the world, the discussion of conscription and whether or not to include women is surfacing. “Denmark plans to increase the required service time to 11 months, and to make conscription mandatory rather than voluntary for women.”
I grew up in the 50s and 60s, prior to the women’s lib movement. I was the eldest of five children. We lived in a traditional family; my father worked as an engineer and manager and my mother managed the household and played a major role in raising us children. At the time most families were headed by a father as the breadwinner and head of household and the mother played the role of home economist. This social structure seemed natural to us. Women are feminine and attract the male of the species. Women bear the children and provide the nurturing and looking-after that the children need. Men are the stronger sex and make it their responsibility to be the protector of and provider for the family. Father and mother figures in families provide balance and structure. I feel lucky to have been born into a time when things seemed as they should be. Men and women had different roles and I saw no one at the time complaining. A single breadwinner was enough to provide for the family. This was even true for my mother’s brother who had nine children with my aunt.
Enter the decades of the 70s and 80s. The feminist movement sought equal rights for women. Women began to enter the job market in numbers; a cottage industry sprang up to care for children while their mothers went off to work. It soon became necessary for both parents to work in order to provide for the families daily necessities of food, shelter and day care. The nurturing that children received from their mothers was now handed off to strangers caring for children while their mothers were working.
In 1971 I was caught in the draft lottery that was implemented to shore up the numbers in the military during the Viet Nam War. Fortunately for me I was sent to Germany and not Viet Nam. I served approximately two years in a field artillery unit as a battery clerk. During my entire time of service, I don’t recall ever meeting a female soldier. I am sure there were some in the German theater, likely positioned in support or medical roles. In fact my wife was in the Army before I met her, and she was a sergeant in charge of a medical team of OR technicians.
I am not necessarily against women serving in the military in appropriate roles if they choose to do so. But in my opinion, women of child-bearing age should not be drafted. My wife was stationed in Texas and never saw duty outside of the US. However, she was eventually diagnosed with PTSD because of her experience in the OR. She saw some horrible injuries and in some cases incompetent doctors. She even encountered one doctor that was about to amputate the wrong limb of a patient had she not spoken up. The arrogant doctor was not kind to her when she pointed out his mistake.
The Birth rate is in decline globally as it is. Why should we help the trend along by drafting child-bearing age women into the military? This makes no sense to me. However if the intent is to lower the birth rate, perhaps it makes sense to someone.
Feminism is a range of socio-political movements and ideologies that aim to define and establish the political, economic, personal, and social equality of the sexes.
I am not against equality of the sexes per se. But we should recognize the differences between men and women and the different roles they play in society. I think the feminist movement has gone a bit too far of late. Is boxing a sport that women should participate in? If so, should testosterone-confused-freaks be allowed to compete against women? We were treated to a boxing horror-show in the recent Olympics in Paris. ls this what passes for entertainment in the 21st Century? What does this say about the present state of our society? Nothing good in my opinion.
Please share and leave a comment whether you agree or disagree. I am curious to learn what others think about the topic of drafting women for military service.
A lengthy discussion.

If we could reign in the lunatics we keep allowing to rule us perhaps this could be a mute discussion. I'm 64 and have 5 children (3 of them are males - the 3 males aren't eligible for the draft, one is 40, one is 27 and one is blind in one eye) but the 2 girls....The oldest joined the army as a cook in 2001, yep right before 9/11 and the other is currently 20. She's a 3rd degree black belt in Kenpo Karate. I'd really hate for her to be drafted into a war that's been created to satisfy the greed of a few.
It is the demise of a civilized society when we start drafting women to fight.
But then again we have things like Rachel Levin in charge. Let's just dress up all the he/she's and call them women and use them to satisfy the draft requirement. (okay so the last part is sort of tongue in check)
